50 Attendance Challenge
What a joy it was to celebrate our volunteers and donors at Food Pantry Appreciation Sunday on February 4! Several food pantry volunteers were present and came forward to be recognized and receive a certificate and a gift of candy: Coordinator Tina Cruse, volunteer workers Mary & Gary Owen, Julie Gill, Linda Dillon, Jamie Roberts, Art & Lois Finnigan, and Delva Palfrey. Former volunteers not present were Dennis Gensler, Albert Mysliwiec, Rachel Mysliwiec, and Shirley Gensler. Tina’s parents, Merl and Shirley Thomasson, were celebrated as the original founders and coordinators of the Shullsburg Food Pantry. They saw a need and through their selfless efforts brought many local families much needed food assistance.
This important work continues today! Thank you to those who donate non-perishable food regularly! It’s a good habit to start. Please support our food pantry by volunteering if you can and with your donations of non-perishable food or with a cash donation. Thank you also to those bringing treats for the celebration: Therese Gratz, Dan & Linda Dillon, Marlene Stewart, Mary Gensler, and Second Chance Coffee.

In the first half of 2023, our church leadership (Accountable Leadership Board) worked hard carrying out various missions and ministries under the 2023 vision statement of CUMC, “Be a welcoming community for all, worshipping together at God’s house.” In line with this vision, the 50 Attendance Challenge Team was organized to work toward the strategic goal of “to have more than 50 at each service.”
We have had five successful Challenge Sundays.
We have had five successful Challenge Sundays.
Our next 50 Attendance Challenge Sunday will be February 4.
February 4 has also been designated Food Pantry Appreciation Sunday at Centenary UMC. Fellowship starts at 10:00 in the narthex with the service beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Shullsburg Food Pantry has played an integral role in Centenary UMC’s mission history, serving the community with dedication for many years. We extend a warm invitation to all those who have been part of this community service ministry throughout its long history to join us for a meaningful celebration service on February 4. Treats and coffee will be served after the service. Whether you were a helper, volunteer, contributor, or friend involved in this ministry at any point in its history, we would be delighted to have you at this special event. If you are aware of individuals who were part of this ministry in any capacity, please share the news of this celebration with them. Whether they were involved for one year or just one occasion, their presence would mean a lot. We also extend this invitation to all family members of the volunteers. If you could provide us with the privilege of inviting them via cards, it would be greatly appreciated. For more information or to confirm attendance, please contact Mary Gensler at (608) 482-2753 or her 50 Attendance Challenge team members: Mary Gensler (Leader) Therese Gratz, Dennis Blum, and Dan Dillon. Let’s come together to celebrate the impact and legacy of the Shullsburg Food Pantry ministry in our community. Looking forward to seeing you there! Our first 50 Attendance Challenge Sunday was Easter Sunday, then after an energetic VBS week we had our second successful Sunday. Our third 50 Attendance Challenge Sunday was held on August 27 with the Re-Awaken CUMC Band playing / leading praise time; we also handed out backpack blessings to children returning to school. The fourth 50 Attendance Challenge Sunday was “Cinnamon Roll Sunday” held on September 24 with the Re-waken band playing/ leading praise time. We had the honor of Dan Dillon preaching about “An Inconvenient Truth.” Therese Gratz started the day off with her yummy cinnamon rolls for Coffee Fellowship time. Thank you to all who made this day a success. Our fifth challenge day was held on Sunday, October 22, when we gathered to celebrate Laity Sunday. We are so glad we have a very supportive church and community. Special thanks to those in our congregation who made this worship possible. Thanks to praise time being led by the talented Re-Awaken Band, our wonderful message shared by Danica Diedrich, our terrific Youth from Confirmation Class helping read announcements, greet our fellow congregants, and light the candles. We also got to have a special event at the service: Art Finnigan, our ALB Chair, presented Bibles to all of the 2023-2024 Confirmation Class. It truly was a wonderful service.
